War Year 1944

The Allies launched a new campaign and opened the Western Front of World War II 75 years ago. The Czech Mint commemorates the legendary Operation Overlord on the second gold coin from the miniseries War Year 1944.

One of the most important military operations in world history broke out on June 6, 1944, when the Allies set out to meet the occupied French Normandy after two years of preparation. When the first morning rays illuminated the horizon, the German observers could not understand what was happening. There were more than five thousand ships. However, the largest invasion fleet ever was not the only one that the Allies had prepared for their enemy. Two hundred thousand men were to land from eleven thousand aircrafts during forty-eight hours. They had an unprecedented logistical background, technical superiority and the moment of absolute surprise. Thanks to the skillful game of intelligence services they managed to deceive the German headquarters. However, there was the so-called Atlantic Wall in the way. Hitler's deadly system of fortifications extending from sandy beaches to upright cliffs prepared for Allied soldiers the "longest day" ever. Although Operation Overlord succeeded and the Western Europe could be liberated, it was still eleven months before the Third Reich was finally defeated ...

Mgr. Petr Horák dedicated the reverse side of the coin to U.S. Army, who run out of landing craft to meet the German machine gun fire. The English inscription bears OPERATION OVERLORD. The obverse side is common to the entire miniseries entitled The War Year 1944 and presents the flags of the states that participated in the operations depicted on the four coins, together with the coin issuer. Since the Czech Mint is provided with the license to coin its commemorative coins by the Pacific Island of Niue, it bears the name and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of the issue 2019.
