Product description

You can not abandon the monolithic settlement during a walk through Prague from one end to the other, so you do not even think that you have actually passed through the territory of four medieval towns. Originally there were separate towns which were connected to one unit in 1784. The Czech Mint dedicated the first gold coin from the four-part miniseries to the Old Town of Prague.

Old Town is dominated by Old Town Square with the Old Town Hall and the Old Town Astronomical Clock. The legendary medieval building is the most visited monument of the historical center of the capital, but the oldest of the Prague sections offers even more. Bethlehem Chapel was the site of Master Jan Hus himself. The monumental Týn Church was the main temple of the hussites. The Municipal House is an Art Nouveau pearl of Prague and the Powder Gate represents the gothic pearl. The Old Town Bridge Tower was built at the same time as the legendary Charles Bridge. The Estates Theater is one of the most beautiful historical theater buildings in Europe. Karolinum is the original building of Charles University. The Clementinum, which served as a monastery, is the seat of the National Library. The Rudolfinum complex is home to the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. And that's not all ...

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů, presents a view of the Old Town Hall with an astronomical clock. The composition is supplemented with the Latin inscription ANTIQUA CIVITAS PRAGENSIS (Old Town of Prague) and the historical emblem of the city. It is made up of towers and a gate with the arm holding a sword. The scene refers to the heroic defense of the metropolis during the Thirty Years' War. The obverse side is common to the entire miniseries and presents the Prague silhouette (enclosed by Prague Castle and Charles Bridge), accompanied by the inscription PRAGA CAPUT REGNI (Prague Head of Kingdom). On the obverse side there are also the attributes of Niue Island that provides the Czech Mint with a license to coin its own commemorative coins. The attributes are the portrait and the name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2019 and the nominal value of 10 DOLLARS (NZD).

The miniseries introduces the New Town of Prague, Mala Strana and Hradcany and represents an addend value to the numismatic collection or an attractive monument for a visit of the capital.
