The "Czech Lions", a series of coins with a foreign licence, were issued in several different versions by the Czech Mint in 2017. The offer further expands in 2019 and two-ounce silver coin minted in the unusual design "piedfort" becomes one of the new variants.
The product line of the Czech Lion is very varied. It includes gold and silver mintages. Their weights correspond to the multiples and units of the troy ounce. The only exception is the largest coin weighing one kilogram. The basic design is "standard" with a matte finish. Selected variants then appear in the "reverse proof" design with a matte mint surface and a polished relief. The latest type of mintage that extends the lion line is the so-called "piedfort". These coins have a double weight compared to traditional mintages, while retaining the diameter, which means they have double the thickness. This type of mintage first appeared in France in the 12th century and currently experiences a big boom among investors and collectors in the world.
All variants of the Czech Lion investment coins weighing more than one troy ounce were modified in 2019 and neither a two-ounce silver coin is an exception. In addition to the two-tailed beast, the reverse side presents two other symbols of the Czech statehood which are the St. Wenceslas crown and the flaming St. Wenceslas Eagle. The obverse side bears the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to coin its own coins. The attributes are the portrait and the name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2019 and the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD). All of this is supplemented by linden branches. The patriotic relief of the coin was made by the medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS., who was inspired by the original proposal made by Jaroslav Bejvl.
The total schedule of issuance counts 5000 pieces - 4470 pieces are available separately in the protective capsule. Another 500 pieces are placed in special numbered packaging which reminds us that the Czechoslovak currency celebrates the 100th anniversary in 2019. The remaining 30 pieces are part of a set of high-weight silver coins.
