The Goliath Birdwing is the fifth coin in the series “Butterflies”, which has already comprised the following coins : “Apollo”, “Large Blue”, “Scarce Copper” and the „Old World Swallowtail”. The coins were struck on Ag 925 blanks, in a low mintage – up to 8 000 pieces, in proof quality.
Obverse:
In the central part of the coin, a likeness of the Queen Elizabeth II. Below, the Mint’s mark: M/W. Around it the inscription: ELIZABETH II 1 DOLLAR. Along the rim of the coin, at the top, the inscription: NIUE ISLAND 2012. In the background, a stylized enlarged fragment of a butterfly wing.
Reverse:
In the central part of the coin, a stylized likeness of the butterfly against the rainforest. To the right, the inscription: ORNITHOPTERA GOLIAT (Latin name for the butterfly).
