Product description

The second gold coin of the Czech Mint from the miniseries The Foundation of the Royal Capital City Prague is dedicated to the New Town.

The name of the New Town may be misleading. It was found by Charles IV in 1348. On its territory there is a number of sights that present moments of Czech history. The ancient times are commemorated by the Romanesque rotunda of Saint Longin. The Gothic times are commemorated by Jindøišská Tower, the Emmaus Monastery or the Basilica of St Mary Major. The Baroque era is represented by the Faust House. The National Theater and the National Museum are proof of Czech maturity at the time of national awakening. The First Republic worshipers can admire the Legiobank building or Adria Palace, together with the Wenceslas Square and the St. Wenceslas equestrian monument that witnessed all the turning points of the tumultuous 20th century. However, the New Town had not been behind the times and it was not afraid of daring ideas, which was proved by Dancing House of 1996.

The eclectic building, which some people admire for its unique shapes and others condemn it as an insult to the historic capital, has become the main motif of the reverse side of the coin. Academic sculptor Zbynìk Fojtù complemented it with a Latin inscription NOVA CIVITAS PRAGENSIS (New Town of Prague), together with the historical emblem of the town. The obverse side is common to the entire miniseries and presents the Prague silhouette (bordered by Prague Castle and Charles Bridge) supplemented by the inscription PRAGA CAPUT REGNI (Prague, Head of the Kingdom). The obverse side bears the portrait and the name of Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2019, and the nominal value of 10 DOLLARS (NZD), which means the attributes of the Pacific island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a license to mint its own commemorative coins.

Lesser Town of Prague and Hradèany will appear together with the Old Town and the New Town of Prague on the gold coins and will represent an addition to the numismatic collection or an attractive commemoration of the capital city.
