The Threatened Nature series of Czech Mint presents protected plant and animal species which are slowly disappearing from nature on Smart coins made of pure silver denominated 1 NZD. In autumn 2014 another coin depicting pulsatilla patens was added to the popular series. Pulsatilla patens, whose common names include Eastern pasqueflower, prairie smoke, prairie crocus and cutleaf anemone, is another name included in the Black and Red Lists of Vascular Plants in the Czech Republic and ranks in the category of critically endangered species C1 (CR). The plant is native to Germany, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Belarus, Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary and Rumania and in all these countries except for Ukraine it is protected.
The reverse of the silver Smart coin was designed by Martin Dašek. It shows two splendid colour flowers together with the plant’s name in Czech and Latin. The obverse side, created by experienced medallist Josef Oplištil, is dominated by a three-dimensional depiction of a wildly growing forest and contains the attributes of the issuer. The Threatened Nature is an untraditional eye-catching collector series. Due to the profound message it conveys it should find its way to every numismatic collection.
