Old Picture Postcards

The Czech Mint issued gold mini-coins weighing a half of gram and placed them in replicas of period postcards to show the most beautiful places of our country. This time it introduces Český Krumlov with its unmistakable castle and chateau.

Český Krumlov has been occupied by a number of large aristocratic families – the Vítkovci, the Lords of Krumlov, Rožmberks, Eggenbergs and Schwarzenbergs. They all developed the city and gave it a representative character. The sights of Český Krumlov made the South Bohemian metropolis famous all over the world. The historical core of the town on the banks of the Vltava River belongs to UNESCO World Heritage. Tourists are interested in a whole range of souvenirs that can not miss postcards. Window lithography, which served as a proposal for coin packaging, was published exceptionally with Czech text by the renowned Viennese publisher Karel Schwidernoch in 1899. “The so-called lithographic postcards from the 90s of the 19th century are the oldest type of postcards and they are mostly valued by collectors. Their creation was demanding in art and production. It was probably a unique part of a private collection because this postcard has never been sent, ” explains collector Pavel Vursta, who provides the Czech Mint with original historical postcards.

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker Petra Brodská, DiS., is dominated by the tower of the Český Krumlov Castle and Chateau. The obverse side of the coin belongs to the name and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2019 and the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), which are the necessary attributes of the island of Niue that provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to mint its own commemorative coins.
