The news about this auction echoed throughout the world. Not without reason – the Portrait of Doctor Gachet is one of the most famous works of art created by Vincent van Gogh. The chef d’oeuvre was sold at an auction for a record price of 82.5 million dollars. Although the further history and location of the famous painting are shrouded in mystery, thanks to the Mint of Poland it can now become the highlight of your collection.
Scandal surrounding the auction was caused not only by the exorbitant price fetched by the masterpiece. The millionaire who bought it announced that the canvas would be destroyed after his death. Fortunately, the rumor was denied shortly after this dramatic statement. Today the exact location of the masterpiece remains unknown. Most probably the painting disappeared in a private collection of art.
The masterpiece depicts dr. Gachet, van Gogh’s physician and friend, looking beyond the viewer with a melancholy gaze. His grief-stricken eyes search for something in the distance. Lines of brushstrokes swim around and through the doctor. Along with contrasting colors, this unique texture is a distinctive feature of Van Gogh’s painterly technique.
