Madonna and Child, also known as Madonna Litta, is one of the most beautiful depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, created to honor the Mother of God. This remarkable masterpiece is a 42×33 cm tempera painting executed between 1481 and 1499. The work of art took its name from the House of Litta, a Milanese noble family who in 1865 sold it to Alexander II of Russia. Today the masterpiece is housed in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Due to subtle gradation of shadowing and tone, smoothness of surface and distinctive composition, the painting is traditionally attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. The devotional subject of the masterpiece is the Virgin Mary nursing the infant Jesus. Both figures are set in a dark interior with two arched windows providing a wonderful view over a picturesque mountainous landscape. Divine Infant holds a goldfinch in his left hand – a symbol alluding to his future Passion.
