Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher. His achievements include improvements to the telescope, consequent astronomical observations and support for Copernicacism. Galileo‘s
championing of heliocentrism was controversial within his lifetime, when most subscribed to either geocentrism. The new coin program from Cook Islands is honoring this great man who changed the world. The silver coin is made of 2 oz pure silver. Symbolizing his discovery of lunar mountains and craters on the moon‘s surface there is applied a natural moonstone in the coin. The coin is housed in a moon shape box.
