The scholar Mikuláš Klaudyán, among others the author of the first printed map of Bohemia, founded the printing press in 1518 and the city became the center of industry from the 18th century. Slavia bicycle factory, founded in 1895, became the most important company. It soon became a motorcycle factory and then Laurin & Klement automobile factory - today's Škoda Auto, which is the largest company in the Czech Republic.
