The collector's cycle of the Czech Mint called Observation towers represents the most beautiful and interesting sightseeing towers of the Czech Republic. The eleventh gold medal coined from one troy ounce of pure gold is dedicated to the lookout tower on Cross Mountain.
The observation tower near the village of Červená Voda on the border between the Orlické Mountains and Hrubý Jeseník did not grow up by accident. The Cross Mountain hillock is the dominant feature, where the Great Cross (as the name suggests) stood from 1653. In 1813, there was a massive procession to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon in the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig. Twenty years later the pilgrimage church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, to which led the Cross path, grew up on the mountain. Moreover, a cruise restaurant has become another attraction - especially for tourists. Everything changed after 1945, when the Cross Mountain became an army practice ground. The return to the old order came in 2007, when a modern observation tower was opened, which brought crowds of visitors to Cross Mountain again.
The commemorative medal made by academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojta belongs to the lookout tower and its religious past. The obverse side of the mintage presents an overall view of the building - a reinforced concrete tubing, which connects the indoor space for organizing social events. Six crosses symbolizing the ancient cross route are visible behind the tower. The reverse side of the medal is dedicated to the cross on the top of the mountain, which replaced the original monument, and a perspective view of the construction that highlights the vertical rib bracing of the tower. The inscriptions include the name of the lookout tower, the height of the building at 25m and the altitude 735m above sea level.
On offer from the Czech Mint, there is also a luxurious collector's etui, where you can store a complete collection of all twelve Czech lookout towers.
