Traditional Ducat Series

Gold ducats of the Czech Republic became the traditional issue of the Czech Mint. They commemorate the lands of the Bohemian Crown in 2019. One-ducat was dedicated to Silesia due to size similarity.

The Silesian country was first inhabited by Germans – specifically by the Silesian vandal tribe (whose name refers to the name of the Slenzy River and, ultimately, the name of the whole Silesia). The Slavic tribe of the Silesians settled in the area during the migration period in the 6th century. The territory of Silesia has belonged to many states over the course of two millennia and its history influenced the history of Bohemia and Moravia. The three units merged into one, creating the so-called lands of Bohemian Crown that often influenced the fate of the whole Europe. Silesian historic part belongs to the Czech Republic today. Silesia remains important even despite the fact it is the smallest of three Czech lands with an area of 4 452 square kilometers and about one million inhabitants.

Black eagle with a silver crescent with a cross and two three-leaves, golden crown and red armor on a golden base - such is the Silesian emblem that is placed in the middle of the obverse side of gold ducat. "Silesian eagle is surrounded by typical buildings of the region. These are cultural and technical monuments, including folk architecture and dominant feature of an observation tower Zlaty Chlum at Jeseniky built in the end of the 19th century. The lower part of the composition is closed by the inscription SLEZSKO" academic sculptor Michal Vitanovsky explains.

The reverse side is common to all four ducats of the Czech Republic issued in 2019. The linear division of the simplified map of the Czech Republic captures the current network of regions and the division by an astragal indicates the land borders. Hatching that cross the borders resemble the previous extent of land territory. The top of the map is accompanied by a current state flag, and in the lower part there is the historic St. Wenceslas Crown. The common use of these motifs emphasizes the continuity of our statehood.

The gold mintage comes in mere 200 pieces and respects the traditional specifications of legendary St. Wenceslas ducats.
